The county council has declared a serious incident.

 

Starting late on Monday night, the initial hole in Godstone High Street grew until it was at least 65 feet (20 metres) long by Tuesday lunchtime.

 

Another opening has now shown up, with a car hanging precariously over the edge and its owner unable to move it.

 

Families were forced to leave their homes because of concerns that exposed cables could cause an explosion. One resident said that the street now “sounded like a waterfall.”
